Program Overview
The Adirondack Pack Basket is one of the most iconic objects associated with the Adirondacks. They are traditionally made in a variety of sizes based on their intended use. The woven Shopping/Picnic Basket, draws on the materials and techniques used in creating Pack Baskets.
Join Linda Scherz for a weekend of traditional basket weaving and have the experience of weaving your own beautiful and functional pack basket patterned from the traditional Adirondack Pack Baskets of history and lore; OR, the Shopping/Picnic Basket, designed by Linda, which is just the right size for that trip to the store to pick up a few things or a summer picnic.
Participants will learn and implement all of the steps in the creation of a pack basket or tote.
Choosing the Pack Basket includes learning to weave a plain weave base from pre-cut spokes, the continuous weave for the sides of the basket, leveling of the top, cutting and tucking, adding the handle, and completing the rim. Lastly, you will add an adjustable webbing (if available) or leather harness for carrying.
Choosing a Shopping/Picnic Basket includes learning to weave a plain weave base with the pre-cut spokes, the simple side pattern using various widths of reed with seagrass and ribbon, lashing on the rim, and adding the webbing handles, made by Linda, and bottom runners to secure the handles.
This class will be fun for all weavers. Linda will demonstrate, teach you weaving techniques, and guide you while you weave your basket. Participants will be using a drawknife with a shave horse and other sharp tools. All materials and tools needed will be provided.
