Great Camp Sagamore is a unique organization that combines the preservation of an Adirondack "Great Camp" with educational programming and guest accommodations. Visitors come for historic tours, residential programs and family events. Great Camp Sagamore is an authentic 1897 National Historic Landmark in the heart of the Adirondack Forest Preserve. It is in Raquette Lake, NY within 100,000 acres of forest preserve to explore and enjoy.

Great Camp Sagamore employs seven year-round staff members and an additional 18-20 during the season (May – October). Position Overview
Great Camp Sagamore seeks an individual who is passionate about the Adirondack Mountains and environmental education for the position of Assistant Outdoor Program Director. The Assistant Outdoor Program Director aids the Program Director in implementing the educational programming that is at the heart of the institution’s mission. Programs at Sagamore are developed both by the institution and partnering organizations and include themes such as nature, outdoor skills, regional history, music, art, and a variety of other disciplines.
The Assistant Outdoor Program Director assists with the implementation of residential adult and intergenerational programming; they lead guided hikes, campfires, canoe paddles, and stream explorations alongside other program staff. The Assistant Outdoor Program Director is the main point of contact for the implementation of programs when the Program Director is not at camp, which will include supervising seasonal outdoor education staff. Additional tasks include trail work, communications with guests and instructors, developing interpretive programming, writing itineraries, giving presentations, and assisting with the organization’s social media communications. Additionally, program staff at Sagamore are responsible for maintaining the boathouse and waterfront areas, overseeing the use of indoor and outdoor fires and ensuring that program guests have a great experience.
Great Camp Sagamore is a community and all employees help to facilitate with the operations of camp. In addition to one’s job specific duties, up to four hours per week may be assigned to another department as needed. Other departments include the office, kitchen, housekeeping and facilities.
The Assistant Outdoor Program Director is a seasonal position based at Sagamore from mid-May through mid-October, with room and board provided. Weekend and evening availability is imperative. The Assistant Outdoor Program Director’s regular work schedule runs Thursday – Monday during our operating season.
Qualifications and Relevant Experience
Bachelor’s degree preferred in outdoor/environmental education, environmental science, environmental studies, biology, chemistry, geology or other relevant coursework.
Strong leadership skills and comfortability guiding groups on outdoor excursions and handling emergency situations as they arise
Excellent communication, writing, and in person & virtual presentation skills
Excellent customer service skills
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
Driver’s license required
Physical Requirements
This position requires the ability to hike several miles at a time while carrying hiking gear.
Benefits
All meals and housing during the season are provided by Great Camp Sagamore in the Dining Hall, and staff have full use of the camp’s amenities, including the Boat House and the open-air bowling alley. Staff members’ friends and family members may enjoy tours, meals, and overnight accommodations at reduced costs.
This is a nonexempt, 40 hour a week position.
Returning seasonal staff members are eligible for Sagamore’s retirement plan.
