During this weekend, we’ll take advantage of Great Camp Sagamore’s location in the center of the Adirondack Park. Many mountains with fire towers on the summit are within an hour’s drive of Great Camp Sagamore, making it an excellent base camp for these climbs. Friday evening we’ll kick off with a filling dinner, an overview of the next day’s hike and some basic wilderness ethics guidelines. On Saturday morning, Sagamore’s program staff will lead a hike up Wakely Mountain, where one of the tallest fire towers in the Adirondack Park sits. Along the way, our guides will point out unique animal and plant species during our rest breaks and discuss tips for climbing other Adirondack peaks safely. That evening we’ll get together for an old-fashioned campfire to share stories of past hikes and enjoy some s’mores. In the morning, you may meet with a member of Sagamore’s program staff to learn about other fire tower mountains nearby and enjoy an energizing breakfast before check-out.
Recommended Gear: Hiking boots, a sturdy backpack, at least 2 refillable water bottles, synthetic outdoor clothing, rain gear, trekking poles, and a light-weight jacket or fleece. Sagamore will provide food and transportation for Saturday’s hike. Our guides will come prepared with basic first aid and back-country emergency supplies.
