EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR – GREAT CAMP SAGAMORE

Great Camp Sagamore (GCS) seeks its next Executive Director for this educational non-profit and National Historic Landmark.  GCS is the steward of the former wilderness retreat of the Vanderbilt family, built in 1897 and recognized as the most architecturally significant gilded age Great Camp.  The Camp is situated on exclusive Sagamore Lake and surrounded by the Historic Great Camps Special Management Area, over 3,500 acres of trails and wilderness.  GCS exists to preserve the remaining 27 historic buildings and operates tours and residential educational programming.  The operation of the camp is fundamentality one of hospitality, manifested in its twin goals of education and preservation.

The ED manages a small team of year-round staff and roughly 25 seasonal staff and interns. The budget of approximately $1.2M is funded by residential programming, contributions, tours, grants and other hospitality operations. The non-profit works year-round, onsite and remotely, but GCS is currently open to the public only from May to October. 

Responsibilities 

The Executive Director (ED) is the Chief Executive Officer, reporting to a Board of Trustees, and is responsible for the day-to-day management and long-term strategic direction of GCS.  The ED’s specific responsibilities include:

National Historic Landmark

  • Preserve GCS consistent with the Facilities Conservation Plan, from daily maintenance to grant-driven capital projects

  • Maintain and develop uses for the Historic Great Camps Special Management Area in coordination with NYS agencies

  • Manage and display movable historic objects, personalty and decoration

  • Work with staff to design, market and implement world class tours of GCS and oversee the operation of the Gift Shop

Educational Institution

  • Develop, market, and implement essential and unique educational programming

  • Oversee recruitment, employment and training of programming faculty, staff and interns

  • Oversee all areas of hospitality, including registration, operation of the kitchen and housekeeping, to maintain a high level of guest satisfaction

Administration

  • The ED is responsible for overall financial management of GCS, including working with the Treasurer to develop an annual budget

  • Direct all development efforts, including fundraising, membership and events

  • Create a welcoming and desirable environment for all GCS employees

  • Assure the safety and security of all employees, guests, and volunteers

  • Work with government authorities and partners to realize the mission of GCS

  • Ensure that GCS has all necessary IT infrastructure and support

  • Develop and implement appropriate marketing for programs, tours, and special events, including a regular digital newsletter, advertising, and physical marketing materials

  • Work with the Board Chair to develop, update and implement the strategic plan

  • Provide regular reporting to the Board of Trustees

Qualifications

Required 

  • Love Great Camp Sagamore and the Adirondack Park

  • Desire to make GCS an essential historical and educational institution in the U.S.

  • Ability to motivate and inspire staff and the GCS community

  • Excellent communication skills and strong computer abilities

  • Fundraising experience or aptitude

  • Comprehensive management skills and familiarity with non-profit management

Valued

  • Masters or PhD in a relevant field

  • Experience in non-profit management

  • Experience in historic preservation

  • Experience in a similar educational institution

Compensation and benefits are competitive and dependent on experience. Onsite housing is provided in the landmark. When GCS is open to the public, board is provided.  GCS is an 18-acre complex with dirt paths and stairs throughout and the job requires regular physical activity.
